As magnetic resonance imaging becomes more widely applicable for the surveillance of women at high risk of breast cancer, techniques to assess fibroglandular tissue and determine background parenchymal enhancement may become available.

Such background enhancement has recently been shown to be positively associated with the odds of developing of breast cancer among 1275 women undergoing screening magnetic resonance imaging (26).
